As long as you know I'm a minority in a minority ;) Most want to make a living as a writer. I do, but believe it near impossible if you only write what you're interested in. Therefore, I accept the compromise that I'll have to make my living elsewhere and my audience will always be limited.
Like anything in the arts, the more your audience knows what to expect from you (and you don't deviate) the larger your audience will be.
As a reader, this holds true for me too. Most stuff I read or watch (for entertainment) I do because I know what to expect. I read you because I like to spend some time on the unknowns. Few people are interested in straying far from their pre-conceptions. Again, me too in many areas.
Two basic ways to make money as a writer on medium is either A) how to succeed (fill in blank _____) and B) why others (fill in blank) are to blame for whatever you're upset about.
Bibliophiles haven't make a real living since 433 BC ;) If then!
