Don't get me wrong. If you're not on the 50-yard-line of clickbait you're not going to be read ;)
SPOILER ALERT TO OTHERS
Sister Clodagh and Mr. Dean never really get close to a relationship. And there's no indication they will after the nuns leave. Sister Ruth is a symbolic symbol, social-sexual desire ringing the bell to the heavans and falling to her death. It's been a while since I've seen it so who knows what I forget.
To make an analogy. Putin is Ruth, totally obsessed with forming a relationship of equals with the United States. Mr. Dean is Europe, oblivious to those emotions and trying to get everyone to get along rationally.
So very few films are made about deep subjects. The Red Shoes is one of my favorites about art, "Is it better to have been stolen from or to have to steal"? Whoa!
Then, like now, sex sells. The book, the movie, etc. The movie is haunting, as you point out.
Then, like today, there's a depression around materialism, about truth, about the big stuff. anyway, we agree. Great film! I'm not contradicting your review!
One last thing, the Dartmouth Film Society showed it. I brought my daughter. They showed it on DVD. I challenged them on it and they had no idea. I"m the last of the generation who understands THAT is a crime.
