Fascinating read! However this struck me as not quite right. Unlike the minerals in batteries (which Japan cannot source locally), Japan could create, and store, a hypothetically unlimited amount of hydrogen. Japan will never forget WWII's painful reminder of it venerability to external energy sources. So I don't see Japan's interest in hydrogen being primarily about "power" as in energy security. Hydrogen seems to fit the bill for them. How am I mistaken? Thanks!
