Great points! I have pointed out in other stories that when you're 0.2% of the population you're not safe anywhere in the world. However, Jews have been very safe in America and some parts of Europe so far. What Israel is doing is making it ONLY safe for Jews in Israel by defining Jews as two-eyes-for-one-eye nuke wielding military first culture. Israel is re-defining what IS a "Jew" to many people. As you point out, that is having an effect here. If it is NOT Israel that is doing this, a question I often ask, what is it about Jewishness, in the U.S., that people are becoming more "anti" about?
I'm 62. When I was in my 20s an older man I knew (not Jewish) asked me, "Why do Jews, eye-for-an-eye, travel down to Texas to get people off death row and Christians, love their neighbor, are down there trying to kill them?"
The quintessential Jew to me was Mel Brooks. Funny, kind, smart. Anyway, that was my perception of Jews when I was young. Many were very ambitious, but many also worked on social issues. I'm pretty sure there would have been no civil rights movement without their involvement. Another type of Jew gone from the scene the Jewish Women humanitarians. Bella Abzug, Gloria Steinem, Betty Friedan, and so on.
But I don't see any young Jews taking their place. Maybe it's impossible. Again, I think the Jewish people are, like everything else, going far right or far left. The far-left has been marginalized and can't get heard, and the far right, well, they have the megaphone.
I haven't seen one young Jewish celebrity say anything critical about Israel. I bet there are many who want to. It isn't Israelis they fear.
Thanks for interesting comment!
