Half of the U.S. is to the right, the other half is to the left. By siding with the U.S. religious "right" Israel is alienating the "left". That is part of Netanyahu's game since Obama and I have always believed it will bite Israel in the ass so hard they won't know what bit 'em.

Some Israel friends argue Israel doesn't need the U.S. Well, they will get the opportunity to prove it! The die is cast with the U.S. Democrats. I expect a slow pull-out from Israel in the coming decades. (I'm usually wrong). Anyway, that's a fuller explanation.
