I couldn't agree more with your assessment.
I would have cut the last two paragraphs. "NATO" has become a triggering word and it really has little to do with your argument--which focuses on how Putin's regime views the world.
Another reason to support your analysis is that Putin has never asked to negotiate anything about NATO, once the invasion started. You'd think he would if it was what was truly upsetting him. Russia' s aggression is pure emotion--just like you say.
