I don't think you're being old fashioned, but heavy with the hypothesis and light on the statistical analysis or evidence. My business is data. I get upset when educated people won't accept what the data says (let alone look at at any). We've had three years to ascertain the effectiveness of masks. The women in that video go through those studies and conclude they have not proven that masks work in the real world.
Does it stop them from wearing them where they're expected to? No.
I don't care if people wear masks or not. What bothers me is if they say it is based on science instead of their opinion. I'm bothered If they say it is patently obvious. If they say "but this reason and that reason" but not this cohort exhibited this and that cohort exhibited that. Or they just ignore what has already been studied.
Is global warming mad-made or naturally occurring? It seems an odd question since most people agree there is warming. The question persists because if it is "natural" people can say things like new technology will fix it, or the tilt of the planet will compensate by reducing sunlight, making it colder--just a bunch of hypothesis masquerading as fact.
If masks work, we can say that humanity can control viruses, that it's up to us. What if it isn't? What IF masks don't work at all and the next virus is worse than Covid 19? What if the vaccines were too slow to the battle? I believe both those. I even believe the virus escaped the Wuhan lab. Because of that I believe all the bio-lab space going up here, in Boston, near tons of colleges, is COMPLETELY dangerous and irresponsible to the young.
There, many things you can write me off as a lunatic with. We'd be better off if we accepted that masks don't work. They didn't do much (if anything) this time so next time?...
And again, thanks for giving me an opportunity to vent ;)
