I loved NYC in my 20s and 30s, 1980s and 1990s. It has an energy, a feeling of possibility, a vibrancy that I never felt anywhere else. The ones who enjoy the cities the most are those who can't, ironically, afford it. Although I have no interest in fashion, the TV series from 2010, "How To Make It In America" captures that NYC very well. Boston/Cambridge has many of the same stuff as NYC. But there is only one NYC and I believe, although still great, 1980 to 2000 was a golden period.
