You're right of course, about who sets the rules. Every culture is different. In America the rule is you don't use your power to shut up other people or to tell the media or intellectual class what to think. To many Americans Putin would look weak and pathetic in that interview. Just like Trump looks weak and pathetic to any intelligent person outside America. Putin said Poland started WWII? I must have read the wrong history books ;)

I don't believe Putin is popular because of his knowledge of history. I think he's popular because after the breakup of the Soviet Union he brought economic growth and a renewed sense of pride. He was very successful. But then he wouldn't give up power. And he went to the dark side.
