I'm 62. I thought I understood what happened in Vietnam. One day, in my early 20s, I bought "About Face" by Colonel Hackworth for $1 on a used book table on 2nd Ave (remember like yesterday). Figured I'd read a few pages. Wow! I don't believe, before reading that book, I understood a single thing about Vietnam.
