I'm with you on Readiohead, but Chris Nolan? That makes me think your experience of science fiction cinema is post 2000. Pre 2000 science fiction was a backwater in entertainment. That allowed filmmakers to get deep and philosophical into the subject of science. Today, it's all about the religion of science, making people feel good that they're part of the smart group. Today, the line is blurred between physics and technology in a way it wasn't decades ago. (the "Black Mirror" series the exception).
Or, pre 2000 science and technology were questions, today they're the only answer.
Watch the original "Day the Earth Stood Still," or "The 27th Day". The last great films for me were: GATTACA and Contact (1997). In the 70s we had "Soylent Green" (that's about to come true), "Silent Running" (also coming soon) and the original "Solaris" (prescient about the loneliness of space).
Once you watch those let me know where you place Nolan and most of the other stuff that tries to pass itself off as science fiction these day.
