In Cambridge, MA, where I live, home to Harvard and MIT, electricity generation has moved to 50% gas from coal and oil. (the rest nuclear, hydro, etc). That's hardly renewals, which haven't changed much in 20 years (9%).
Physics is physics. It would be nice if you recognized in your story that for now, there is simply no replacement for trucking, air travel, military, fertilizers, plasters, and so on.
I know you'll think me a nut. But this kind of wishful thinking about new energy tech (synthetic oil in those days) is partly what got us into WWII. But don't get me wrong. I think climate change is 110% serious. Be that as it may. Ignoring the physics of energy is, again, a precursor to war.
