I've heard these things about Israel before, but hard to talk about without sounding like a racist (about ethnic Jews, Arabs or Russians, etc). I'm not sure I want to visit anymore ;)

What did you think about Shtisel? I found the Ruchama and Lippee Weiss story deep and interesting. While everyone else seemed arrogant about their Jewish beliefs, the two of them were genuine, flawed people. Ruchama didn't tell people about Lippe leaving because she felt everyone would use it to attack her family. They were the most screwed up family, the least preachy, and yet oddly the most sympathetic in the show.

Or put another way, through the eyes of the Lippes we can see the selfish disregard you pointed out.
