My friend's father, an artist, was a Merchant Marine in WWII. He was going somewhere in Europe and they thought he was a spy so locked him up. They asked him who won the World Series. They also asked him about various baseball players. Eventually they concluded even a German would know more than he did so let him go. My friend's mother loved telling that story.
