One of my favorite stories about the difference between the U.S. and authoritarian regimes. There was an American-born Chinese scientist accused of spying at Los Alamos. He went through years of hell before being exonerated. Someone asked him if he hated the U.S. now. He said, "No, because in China I'd be dead."
