No one really gives a hoot about Ukraine.
I haven't had any doubt that the U.S. will do whatever it takes to beat Russia. At first it would try to do it as cheaply as possible (send surplus weapons). Then it would feel the sting of humiliation and failure. The back channels would start to come alive.
I was blown away that Larry Wilkerson was arguing that Europe should eat some crow and negotiate an end with Putin. No, those people will be replaced with cold blooded killers.
The studios never wanted the Patton speech at the beginning of the film "Patton," starring George C. Scott. I believe that speech still rings true to most Americans who are still mostly immigrants who have no interest in losing their standard of living to someone else.
So I guess my quibble with this story is that it suggestions the general public has a vote here in the sense of partisan politics. They do not. I mean, you can believe they do. But they don't. If they did, we wouldn't be sending weapons to Israel anymore.
As I argued in one of my pieces. The Republicans (the real ones, not fringe news-hour comedians) have never had an opinion about Ukraine one way or the other. Behind closed doors both Republicans and Democrats (and voters) are of one mind. The U.S. will only accommodate Russia so far. Then it will do whatever it takes to win.
As Patton said in the movie. Americans (immigrants) love a winner. They didn't come here to lose. And they relate to Ukrainians who have shown they can win when all odds were stacked against them.
