Not sure about the "gradual" part ;)

All religions split between "spiritual" and "materialistic" camps. The first, one has a direct relationship to God. The second, after their relationship to a Bishop/Rabbi/Oman etc. Zionists are in the second camp, as you pointed out.

All people in religions in the first camp generally get along. They all understand, "God is up there, we are down here." People who follow other people who say that have a special connection to God are easily swayed into believing they are equal with God.
