Russia has always served as the "evil" empire (for the West). Even if Russia was given all its currently occupied Ukrainian territory it's doubtful it could hold it in the decades ahead. Before the invasion Russia couldn't afford to fix its only aircraft carrier. Most of the weapons were built during Soviet times. Now most of its tanks are destroyed and much all besides.

The argument that after Ukraine Russia will drive to the West is absurd. With what equipment? Russia's gains in Ukraine were by surprise. Europe is not going to get "surprised".

If Putin could have rebuilt the military he would have. Now he's lost most of it. To rebuild it now will lead to internal revolt. That's really the problem he faces. Ukraine and sanctions are pushing him into making a choice, both of which are horrible.

The only power Russia has the the minefields protecting its Ukrainian territory. This is why Russia has to fight to the end. It had no other options and the West won't give it any.

But that might be a mistake. If Russia falls Europe, Asia, the U.S., are going to come to loggerheads. Like the destruction of the Iraqi government. That might not be good for the region.
