"Should suffer" only works when applied to all equally. Otherwise, the ones who suffer more eventually revolt against the ones who suffer less.

The reason the Torah forbids idolatry is simple as can be. Don't taunt other people with your possessions. Idolatry wasn't some drawing on a wall. It was a gold, silver or emerald status symbol.

People get killed not because the ones who suffer less find ways of talking themselves into believing the ones who suffer more deserve it, or it can't be helped, for whatever reason.

Anyway, tribal conflict isn't specific to Jews and Muslims. Look at any conflict in the world and you'll find other tribes with the same problems.

Should successful people suffer? Define successful.
