The first. No one prefers a dictatorship. Do you know anyone who says they’d prefer a dictator? As I said, it’s a pejorative. “Socialist” also has a pejorative meaning these days as a dictatorship in group-form. Dictator is what we call someone after they’ve come to power. Xi Jinping and Vladimir Putin are often called dictators but I don’t believe their harshest critics would say they were put in power as dictators. Maduro is another case in point.

I don’t know why monarchies have been the most prevalent form of government but I expect it’s because they are simple to set up and follow. Someone has to have the last word. For whatever reason, humans seem to want one person to become a final arbiter. I don’t take the view that Kings create themselves. They are a lesser of evils created by the public. They are a compromise between a perfect meritocracy (whatever that might be) and simple anarchy.

Most people don’t want to worry about getting poisoned or stabbed in their sleep. Most people don’t want that much power. Too risky. They want to live the life before them. The reason democracy often doesn’t work is because it is so stressful and volatile, which is on full display recently. Who will vote for what? Will we end up in civil war? What is the best use of state finances, etc., etc. With a monarchy much of that isn’t relevant. The King is at top, his son or daughter will be next King or Queen, and down through the ages. The ruler may be bad, but it’s an evil people know. They learn to work around it. That was an attraction people had to Trump. They knew he was too selfish to care about “fixing” them.

The CCP is a type of monarchy too. Most of the leaders are offspring from Original CCP founders. Xi Jinping may have not had “royal” parents, but his wife did. Or CCP leaders pick those to follow them at an early age. We have elements of monarchy in the U.S. too. The Kennedys, Bushes, Clintons, etc. You and I would probably NOT vote for someone on the fact of their being related to anyone already in government. But you and I are the very small minority!

Most people want one ruler. Monarchies have historically been the government most compromise around. The real politics happens outside the King’s chambers.
