They might not be sacrificing men for land but men for time. The public seems to have forgotten the horrors of all the Buchas this past year. It remains to be seen if enough equipment reaches Ukraine to cut Russia off in the South. I'm very depressed about this whole thing. Since the U.S and EU don't appear serious about doing what's necessary to push Russia out of Ukraine then once Russia has been degraded enough the West will give Ukraine a horrible deal they will have little choice but accept. My only hope is that the Putin regime falls apart before that happens.
