It's a common misconceptions that things go sideways because "proper" protocols weren't followed. The problem, as I see it, is no one was strong enough in calling out the problem, like "stop stepping on his neck you might kill him".

No one said, "should it appear that we're making him look like a convicted terrorist?"

Another problem with the lack of social connections between people. 20 years ago the head of the Mass FBI would know the head of the Guards and they'd figure it out.

I wonder if NATO is training Ukrainians and the ones with battlefield experience are thinking, "this stuff won't work here."

But like you said, I'm not pointing out anything new.
