Why Did Zelensky Taunt Putin?

From the Blitz to Kyiv: How provoking a dictator’s wrath has historically shifted the target to innocent civilians.

In August 1940, London was accidentally bombed by German Luftwaffe pilots who had drifted off course. In retaliation, Churchill immediately ordered a targeted bombing raid on Berlin. This infuriated Hitler, causing him to pivot the Luftwaffe’s focus away from destroying Royal Air Force airfields and onto the systematic bombing of London instead.

Might Zelensky’s administration intend to taunt Putin into killing more Ukrainian civilians to better re-unite them for the war?

Some Context

As of June 2026, Russia has stalled in taking territory, and what it has taken is hardly secure. Ukraine can hit as deep into Russia as it chooses. Ukraine has significantly disrupted fuel supplies in Crimea, causing 30% of Russian vacationers to cancel their summer trips. And Ukraine’s drones continue to improve faster than Russia’s ability to down them.

Lately, Ukraine appears to have the upper hand.
