Your stories are so f'ing good I'd hard to fault them. Nonetheless, what "they"? The "right"? As I commented on another of your stories, I feel that's become a trope, an easy excuse for all the ails the U.S.
First, the place where getting-old buggers like us should move to, to be happy, has nothing to do with a nation's health. A kitchen is bad because the cook couldn't stand the heat and left? Okay! :)
America swings between extremes of narcissism and patriotism. For every American trying to build a better healthcare system, another is painting his house purple and leaving the lawn un-mowed. From Burning Man to bridge clubs, the U.S. simply cannot be defined as left or right. It's left, right, up and down.
I feel the same way you do, about the far-right. However, when I step back and look at my people, I only see promises they won't pay for. They want climate change, but buy status and expensive EVs for themselves and leave everyone else with sub-prime auto loans. They put their kids in private schools and let public schools go to hell. They bend the laws and tax codes to favor their ability to speculate in real estate. And worse of all lately, they pretend people aren't getting Killed in Ukraine (and poor Russians fighting there) for a better life, which they have the wealth to stop (IMO).
You think there are good people? You point it out in your story. If they have the money they don't stay to fix things, they go somewhere else and pretend the money they took has nothing to do with how the U.S. got so fucked up today.
They certainly don't go to disintegrating countries to teach young people ;) Ironically, the far-right is probably more appreciative of that!
