You're right. The changes are so big they've moved from quantitative to qualitative. My kids laugh at me whenever we watch a movie pre 1980s. I exclaim, "look how few cars there are on the road back then, and people milling about!"
Dostoevsky's "Notes from Underground" remain my favorite critique of humankind's inability to act rationally for a common good.
